The Culture of Hunza – Introduction, Dresses, and Food

Introduction

The Burusho, also known as the Hunza people, live in Hunza, Nagar, Chitral, and in valleys of Gilgit–Baltistan in northern Pakistan, a small group of 350 Burusho people reside in Jammu and Kashmir, India as well. Their language, Burushaski, has been classified as a language isolate. Although their origins are unknown, it is likely that the Burusho people “were indigenous to northwestern India (current-day Pakistan) and were pushed into their present homeland by the movements of the Indo-Aryans who migrated to the subcontinent in 1800 B.C.

Dresses

Male members of Gilgit Baltistan wear different stuff of woolen caps they consider it an honor for them.
Men usually wear:

  • Woolen hat
  • Salwar kameez
  • Woolen robe with long or short sleeve

The most elegant part of women’s dress is the traditional cap. Various types of caps are used. The most popular cap is the beautiful embroidered Iraghi cap with the traditional piece of the jewel called silsila. Many other types of caps are used in various regions.
The customs of wearing caps are also common in Gilgit Baltistan, especially during events like bridal makeup. Women usually wear:

  • Iraghi cap
  • Loose shalwar kameez
  • Colorful Frock
