Malta Culture: Lifestyle, cultural and Maltese history

The island of Malta played an important strategic role, especially as a base for Allied forces in World War II. After the war, the self-government movement became stronger. Malta became independent from the United Kingdom and joined the Commonwealth in 1964 and was declared a republic on 13 December 1974. It joined the European Union (EU) in 2004. Roman Catholicism is a major influence on Maltese culture. Valletta is the capital.

Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, featuring fishing, tourism, handicrafts and agriculture. The island is full of historic sites, castles and amazing panoramas, as well as one of the island’s most preserved prehistoric temples, the Artemis. Gozo also has a nightlife and cultural calendar, with some dining facilities.

Comino, The main attraction of the island is the Blue Lagoon. In the summer season, this aquamarine water shelter, shining on the white sand, is very popular with day trippers. Other beaches on the island include Santa Maria Bay and San Nicola Bay.
Comino is also worth a visit in winter, and is perfect for walkers and photographers. Without urban areas or cars on the island, one can easily smell wild tayammum and other herbs.
