Condoms in Gutters are causing Sewerage Problems in Karachi

Karachi has been the most polluted city of Pakistan in past years. The leading cause of pollution is water pollution. According to a recent report, the disposal of used contraceptives like condoms has been causing Karachi’s sewerage problems.

According to the report, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) has recovered many condoms from the gutters and drains while cleaning the sewerage lines on Thursday. This vast amount of condoms were affecting the flow of sewage. These have been creating severe blockage problems in the central gutter pipelines.

KWSB said that they had found many used contraceptives when a team was cleaning the pipeline in Clifton Block 2. This is not a new incident; KWSB often finds these kinds of things in Karachi’s pipelines.

Water increases the condom up to 400 times their size, which blocks sewage flow in pipelines. A KWSB official said that these kinds of things must be disposed of in trash cans.

KWSB has requested the government to generate awareness in people about these kinds of problems. Government departments should play their roles in spreading awareness about this.
