Signs of Histrionic Personality Disorder

About 2 percent of the population has Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD). 1 Even though both men and women can have this disorder, women are diagnosed with it more often. Some of the “tells” that a person may have HPD include acting, looking, dressing, and talking to others in a way that is too flashy. People with HPD need people to notice them and will go out of their way to get it. They may take on the role of “damsel in distress” even when things are going well.

Even though their feelings may be unusually shallow, they tend to be “emotional exhibitionists,” or people who act out feelings they can’t really feel. From one end of the emotional spectrum to the other, their actions show how strong their feelings are. They may cry uncontrollably or show a lot of joy or happiness that seems out of proportion. People with HPD can feel very happy for a short time and then quickly feel very sad. Because they are “acting out” their feelings instead of “feeling” them, they can switch from one intense show to the next. When they react to events, it’s likely that they’ll use a plan they’ve already made.

Changes in Career

People with HPD tend to get bored easily, so routines, jobs, friends, and romantic partners can get old for them quickly. Their careers may have a lot of zigzags and sudden stops and starts because they tend to move from job to job without much regret about missed chances. Because they can’t really live their lives, quitting a job, leaving coworkers, and just moving on doesn’t bother them as much as it might for other people.

Risks involving Relationships

People who live with HPD have spent their entire lives “playacting” their emotions. Which makes it difficult for them to maintain authentic relationships with other people. Because of this, they are less able to form close relationships with other people. Because they typically lack the ability to be honest with other people. However they are unable to be honest with themselves. Unfortunately, their disregard for cultivating meaningful relationships can leave their friends and partners with a sense of isolation and emptiness.
