An excellent way to drive on curved roads is to spin the steering wheel as little as possible without going over the centerline.
Please note that cutting entirely across the inside of a curve on a public road is not recommended; doing so would put you in the line of oncoming traffic and endanger other cars.
Instead, the idea is for drivers to make good use of their lane’s width to make it easier to negotiate the bend and increase its visibility. The aim is to turn the wheel as little as possible.
To safely navigate a curve, follow these three steps:
- When approaching a curve, reduce your speed and pull over to the side of your lane opposite the curve’s direction. If the road turns to the right, move to the left side of your lane.
- Continue to drive through the bend, effortlessly putting your car on the other side of your lane as you go.
- As you near the end of the turn, gently relax back into your usual lane position, then accelerate straight.
This driving style follows the path of the most significant feasible arc, reducing the severity of a curve and tire stress, and the danger of sliding out of control. Furthermore, drivers have a clearer vision of the road ahead and more time to respond to any risks.
And when negotiating a bend, you must keep an eye out for other cars and traffic. While driving through a curve, other vehicles too near the middle of the road may put you in danger of a head-on accident.
In a skid, here are some pointers for restoring control
If the car begins to slide on a winding road, drivers should not worry if the brakes, accelerator, or steering wheel stop functioning as they should.
They should instead remove their foot off the brake and accelerator pedals. Both hands should be relaxed on the driving wheel, but no rapid movements should be made.
The most important thing is to avoid oversteering and slamming on the brakes. Regain control of the car when it has had time to slow down; softly apply the brake and resume steering.
