Creativity Is a Process, Not an Event

Creativity:

“”Innovation is a process in which something unique and useful is created. The generated item may be intangible or actual””.

Our minds must draw associations between apparently contradictory ideas to think creatively. Is this an ability we are born with or one we learn from practice? All of this is to say that saying “I’m just not the artistic type” is a pretty lame reason for lacking creative thinking. Certain people are genetically predisposed to be more artistic than others. However, almost everyone is born with a sort of imaginative ability, and the rest of our creative thinking skills can be trained. What would it take to realize your full artistic potential?

As I discussed in my article on Threshold Theory, being in the top 1% of intellect has little to do with being incredibly imaginative. Instead, you would be intelligent (but not brilliant) and then work hard, prepare deliberately, and bring in your reps. Brilliant artistic work is well beyond your control as long as you achieve a certain level of intellect. According to the findings of a 2013 report, “we obtained proof that once the intelligence level is reached, personality traits become more predictive of creativity.”

Creativity is the ability to make something new. This might be a picture or a piece of music—but it might also be a new idea.

“The entire self-esteem campaign misled us into believing that celebrating intellect, creativity, and talents would promote self-confidence and self-esteem and that anything better would result. However, we’ve discovered that it backfires. People who have been lauded for their creativity are now concerned with achieving the next thing, about taking on the difficult challenge without appearing talented, thus tarnishing their reputation for genius.
So instead, they’ll stick to their comfort zone and get really defensive when they hit setbacks.

So, what can we be thankful for? The effort, the strategies, the doggedness and persistence, the grit that people demonstrate, the courage that they demonstrate in the face of adversity, the ability to bounce back when things go wrong and know what to try next. So, I believe that conveying certain ideals of the method, feedback, and rewarding individuals who engage in the process, rather than merely a good result, is an important aspect of fostering a development mentality in the workplace.”

Last Paragraphs on Creative Thinking:

Creativity is a process, not an end result. It’s not about a lightbulb moment. You must overcome mental and internal roadblocks. You must make a conscious effort to practice your art. And, like Newton, you must stick with the system for years, if not decades, to see your artistic talent blossom.
We all tend to get on best with people like us, particularly people with the same background and overall views on life. However, associating with people who are like us tends to mean that our thinking gets a bit ‘lazy’. Our assumptions go unchallenged, and our views tend to get reinforced
